My Path to Becoming a Better Speaker

Nov 11, 2024

Introduction

Becoming a better speaker is a journey. It requires patience, practice, and a willingness to improve. I embarked on this path with a goal to communicate more effectively and confidently. Here, I share my experiences and the steps I took to enhance my speaking skills.

Understanding the Importance of Clear Communication

Clear communication is essential in both personal and professional settings. It helps convey ideas, build relationships, and influence others. I realized that to be an effective speaker, I needed to articulate my thoughts clearly. This understanding was the first step in my journey.

Practicing Regularly

Practice is crucial for improvement. I began by speaking in front of a mirror to observe my body language. Then, I moved on to practicing with friends and family. Their feedback was invaluable. It helped me identify areas for improvement and build confidence.

Joining a Speaking Group

I joined a Toastmasters club after I felt comfortable speaking in front of family and friends to expand my network. I was offered opportunities to give formal and impromptu speeches at those meetings. In addition, I was given several opportunities to evaluate others' speeches and serve in different roles, such as timer, grammarian, joker, and toastmaster.

Learning from Others

I watched speeches by accomplished speakers. Analyzing their techniques, such as their use of pauses and emphasis, taught me a lot. I also attended workshops and seminars to learn from experts. These experiences were enlightening and helped me refine my own style.

I learned a method to connect with my audience from an Author Advantage Live event: tell a story supporting your key points that others can relate to. I gave a speech on how learning to fly transforms your life and relationships. I knew that speech would be received well because although my audience wasn't pilots, they were a tight-knit group that valued the benefits relationships offered. I described how my dad and I got into a dangerous situation and how we applied our flying skills to land safely and look out for one another.  I emphasized the skills that strengthen relationships and can weather any storm.

Recording and Reviewing

Recording my speeches allowed me to review and critique my performance. I could see my strengths and weaknesses more clearly. This self-assessment was a powerful tool in my development as a speaker. In addition, I learned how long my speeches were and could make necessary adjustments to keep them within the allotted time.

Focusing on the Audience

Understanding the audience is key to effective communication. I learned to tailor my message to their interests and needs. Engaging with the audience, making eye contact, and responding to their reactions made my speeches more impactful.

Conclusion

My journey to becoming a better speaker has been rewarding. It has not only improved my communication skills but also boosted my confidence. The steps I took can help anyone looking to enhance their speaking abilities. Remember, the key is to practice, seek feedback, and continually learn.

Embrace the journey and enjoy the process of becoming a more effective and confident speaker.

I highly recommend Toastmasters to develop your speaking and business skills in a nurturing and supportive environment.
