Why It’s Important to Include a Loved One’s Values When Telling Their Story

When people tell the story of someone they lost, they often focus on memories, events, and experiences they shared together. While those moments are meaningful, another important part of storytelling is talking about the values that person lived by and how those values influenced others.

Memories help people understand what happened. Values help people understand who someone truly was.

A person’s work ethic, faith, integrity, discipline, compassion, sense of humor, or willingness to help others can leave a lasting impact that continues far beyond a single experience or moment in time.

When you include values in storytelling, the story becomes deeper and more meaningful because it explains not only what a person did, but why they mattered.

After losing my dad, I realized that many of the lessons that stayed with me the most were connected to the way he approached life. The standards he held himself to, the goals he pursued, and the way he treated people all influenced the way I began approaching my own life and decisions moving forward.

Another reason values are important in storytelling is because they allow future generations to learn from people they may never have had the chance to meet personally. Stories become more powerful when they communicate principles and lessons that continue helping others long after someone is gone.

You do not need to tell every detail of someone’s life in order to honor them well. Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can share is the values they passed on to you and the positive influence they had on the person you are becoming today.
